Postal Scales For Letters and Parcels

Since 1840 the UK postal system has been charging
its postal rates to courier letters based on weight,
and not as previously by the number of sheets in the
letter. And since this time nearly every variety and
type of weighing mechanism has been employed at
one time or another by post offices around the world. Therefore, Postal Scales have become the most
collectable and collected type of scales, ranging from
utilitarian basic designs to more complex, artistic and beautifully constructed ones using precious metals,
the finest woods and intricate inlays.

This small postal desk scale is 10 inches (25cm) long by 7 inches (18cm) wide and the wooden stand is 3.5 inches (9cm) deep. The overall height is 6 inches (15cm). There are 7 brass weights from 8oz down to 1/2oz. The main UK postal rate (engraved on the flat pan to the right) states that a 4oz letter costs 1d to post. For the British Empire, Egypt & USA a 1oz letter is 1d to post and 'Other Countries' have a stated rate of 1oz = 2 1/2d to post.
